Summers County

Summers County blends natural beauty with rich heritage. Visit the historic railroad town of Hinton, the southeast entrance to the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. Nearby, in Talcott, learn the Legend of John Henry, the “Steel-Drivin’ Man,” who famously raced and defeated a steam-powered drilling machine at the Great Bend Tunnel in 1870, losing his life with a hammer in his hand. And before you go, stop by the beautiful Sandstone Falls to admire the stunning cascades, or spend time in nature at Bluestone Lake or Pipestem Resort State Park.

Summers County is known for its three rivers: the New, Bluestone and Greenbrier. Hinton, the county seat, was once a bustling railroad town during the coal industry’s peak. Families like the Ballengees and Hintons played a big role in its growth.

Explore the Hinton Historic District, home to 200 buildings that highlight a variety of architectural styles. Within this vibrant area, you’ll find plenty of places to shop, dine and unwind. Browse outdoor gear and fashion at Otter & Oak, then grab a quick, tasty bite at The Market on Courthouse Square. Catch a film, play or live music performance at the beautifully restored Ritz Theatre.

The county offers many outdoor activities, including fishing, hiking and horseback riding. Pipestem Resort State Park and Bluestone State Park are two popular spots. Pipestem has golfing, horseback riding and fishing, while Bluestone, located on the shore of Bluestone Lake, is great for fishing, hiking and swimming, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. For a unique experience, visit the Three Rivers Avian Center, a 110-acre facility dedicated to wild bird conservation and ecosystem stewardship education.

Just north of Hinton, view the breathtaking Sandstone Falls. It is the largest waterfall on the New River, spanning 1,500 feet wide with drops ranging from 10 to 25 feet. Enjoy the scenery and capture a few photos from boardwalks, bridges and scenic overlooks.

Summers County has a rich history tied to railroads and coal mining, and it’s where the legend of John Henry, The Steel Drivin’ Man, comes from. Pay homage to the folk hero at the John Henry Historical Park in Talcott. The county hosts annual events like John Henry Days, the West Virginia Water Festival and Hinton Railroad Days. Additionally, history lovers can tour the Graham House, one of West Virginia’s oldest homes, and visit several museums.
