Roots & Ripples: A Walk Through Time at Burnwood

September 13, 2025 • 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Location: Burnwood Trailhead - New River Gorge National Park and Preserve

Join us for this collaborative event to learn about the unique characteristics of old-growth forests and the role they play in maintaining healthy watersheds. The Burnwood Trail features 12-acres of old-growth forest that escaped past industrial logging, a rare thing for most of the New River Gorge region. Many trees along this trail are confirmed to be over 300 years old.

This event is co-hosted with the Plateau Action Network, a watershed organization focused on promoting watershed quality and improvement within the New River Gorge. Other partnering organizations for this event include the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, Appalachian Headwaters, and Beckley Sanitary Board.

Activities include:

Join a park ranger for a guided hike through the old-growth forest along the Burnwood Trail. This trail is 1.2 miles long on easy to moderate rocky terrain. Hiking shoes or boots are recommended.
