250 years of Community: African American Life and History in the New River Gorge - February 28, 2026
February 28 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Join National Park Rangers at the Canyon Rim Visitor Center as they discuss the history of African American communities within the New River Gorge from the beginning of their records to the present day. African Americans shaped not only our local communities but, in many cases, the history of our nation as well. From our more high-profile connections like John Henry, Carter Woodson, or Katherine Johnson to the thousands of everyday folks who called this place home, who did not end up in the history books. The program will take place at our Canyon Rim Visitor Center on Saturday, February 28, at 1 p.m. and Sunday, March 1, also at 1 p.m. The program is free to attend, and no sign-up is required.
