Color Play @ The Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia

Color Play – the newest exhibit at the Youth Museum will be on display until Dec. 31, 2017.

Color plays a vitally important role in the world in which we live. In art, color can produce a mood or atmosphere, create space, light and shadow. On a human level, color can sway thinking, change actions and cause reactions. Scientifically color can irritate or soothe your eyes, raise your blood pressure or suppress your appetite.

The exhibit has 14 hands-on components and at the different stations major concepts are explores such as white light, prisms, pixel colors, color mixing, afterimages, layering, color patterns and more.

Museum hours area daily 10am to 6pm.

1st – Photo and History Tour
Self-guided tour with storytelling by the campfires at the Park area and you can visit the Shawnee Indians Burial Grounds.You might want to bring a flashlight, camera or your paranormal equipment. PHOTOS WILL BE ALLOWED – Tour from dark to 11pm. 

2nd – Lake Nightmare
A haunted house attraction where our team of professional fright technicians will bring your worst fears to life. Our scares will become your Nightmares. NO PHOTOS OR VIDEO ALLOWED AT THIS ATTRACTION – Tickets will be sold until 10:30pm (10pm on Halloween night)

Purchase tickets at the gate or online.

The haunted park has been the subject of several high profile TV shows including the Travel Channel’s Most Terrifying Places in America, the Discovery Channel’s Ghost Lab, and ABC’s Ten Most Haunted Places in the World. Paranormal investigators have combed the site in search of ghosts, and witnesses make claims of swings moving on their own and the disembodied laughter of children.

“Belles” @ Historic Fayette Theater

Outdoor Adventure & Safety Fair @ Guyandotte Point Recreation Area - RD Bailey Lake

The US Army Corps of Engineers presents Outdoor Adventure and Safety Fair at Guyandotte Point Rec. Area (boat ramp). This family fun event will have about 20 different activity stations focused on nature, safety, and outdoor recreation. There will be tomahawk demonstrations, live birds of prey, black powder demonstrations, casting skills challenge, hunting skills challenge, youth archery range, youth BB gun range, kayak demonstrations, fire safety house, water safety activities, Smokey the bear, Bobber the water safety dog, and much more!

Escape Rooms: Alice In Wonderland & CSI @ WVU Tech Crime Scene House

The student-run Forensic Investigation Association and Psychology Club at WVU Tech are hosting  two themed escape rooms. One: “Alice in Wonderland,” will task escapees with finding White Rabbit’s pocket watch in time for tea with the Mad Hatter.

The second escape room, Crime Scene Investigation: Beckley, will challenge visitors to solve a string of grisly crimes before the case goes cold.

Schedule:

  • Thursday, Oct. 5: 5 to 9 p.m.
  • Friday, Oct. 6: 5 to 9 p.m.
  • Saturday, Oct. 7: noon to 9 p.m.
  • Sunday, Oct. 8: 2 to 6 p.m.

Each room will give a maximum of 10 visitors 50 minutes to escape. Space is limited.

10-mile Bluestone Turnpike Hike @ Pipestem Resort State Park
Oct 8 @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Start hiking at 10:00 a.m. from the patio at Mountain Creek Lodge. Ride the aerial tram down to Mountain Creek for this 10 mile hike from Pipestem State Park to Bluestone State Park. Wear good shoes, bring a light lunch (sandwiches and such), and plenty of water. A shuttle returns hikers to Pipestem around 4:00 p.m.

Preregistration recommended due to limited shuttle space. Sign up at the nature center or call Julie McQuade. Allow about 4-5 hours for the Bluestone Turnpike Hike. Hike leader is a National Park Service Ranger.
