Theatre WV is ON!
Theatre WV is one of the most unique outdoor theatres in the United States, highlighting both the unique culture of West Virginia and the artistic excellence of the performers and musicians.
The spectacular New River Gorge National Park & Preserve combined with the incredibly talented performers brings the Grandview Amphitheatre to life.
The West Virginia Historical Drama Association founded Theatre WV back in 1955. The iconic Honey in the Rock debuted in 1961, and since then more than 1 million people have enjoyed the excitement of outdoor musical drama at the Grandview Amphitheatre.
Why Outdoor Theater?
“Some days I think it would be better to be inside, especially when it rains… but the show must go on, and that is part of what makes it exciting and fun. The theatre was designed to highlight the natural beauty of West Virginia. It’s truly a unique experience. We are a part of this area, part of the fabric of the community. We are keeping the tradition of live theater alive.”
Why Should Audiences Come Experience the Show?
“We do battle the perception that if you’ve seen it before you don’t need to see it again, but this year we have new actors and actresses, we’ve reworked the script and each director brings a new perspective to each show. And the performers and shows themselves change. The show you see on Tuesday is different than the show you see on Saturday.”
Tips for Theatergoers:
- It’s ok to bring a blanket. It goes from light to dark during the show, and once the sun sets it can be chilly.
- Come early! Music starts playing an hour before the shows start.
- You can bring a picnic basket, but the concession stand is legendary, and it will probably be more enticing.
2022 Summer Lineup:
- Hatfield & McCoys
- Rocket Boys the Musical
- The Wizard of Oz
