Southern WV’s Covered Bridges
While Southern West Virginia is particularly well-known for having
one of the world’s longest single-span steel-arch bridge (aka The New River Gorge Bridge), we also have some very remarkable covered bridges.
Southern West Virginia is home to 4 covered bridges, which are all listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Autumn is the perfect time to discover these incredible, historic bridges.
1. Herns Mill Covered Bridge
Located by Lewisburg in Greenbrier County and built in 1884, the Herns Mill Covered Bridge measures 10 feet, 6 inches wide and 53¾ feet long. The red board & batten siding and metal roof of this bridge protect its queen post truss design.
2. Hokes Mill Covered Bridge
At 12 feet wide and 81 ½ feet long, the Hokes Mill Covered Bridge is
the longest covered bridge in Southern West Virginia. You can find it near Ronceverte in Greenbrier County. It was completed in 1899, and has red board & batten siding and a metal roof.
3. Indian Creek Covered Bridge
Sitting just outside of Salt Sulphur Spring in Monroe County, Indian Creek Covered Bridge was originally built in 1898 and is 11 ½ feet wide and 49 ¼ feet long. This bridge was completely restored in 2000, and is one of the most popular and most photographed covered bridges in the state.
4. Laurel Creek Covered Bridge
Built in 1910, the Laurel Creek Covered Bridge near Lillydale in Monroe County is the shortest covered bridge in the state at 34 ½ feet long and 13 2 ½ inches wide. It has red painted wood siding and a metal roof.
