Budget Travel in Fayette County (budget travel series part 2)

The New River Gorge is such a breathtakingly gorgeous place, everyone should have a chance to experience it at least once.

We’ve compiled a few money-saving travel tips to encourage everyone to make the pilgrimage to Fayette County, even if they’re on a budget.

STAY: Camping

Stay as long as you want without overspending: take a camping trip or bunk in a one-room woodland cabin. You’ll be closer to the natural beauty of the area, and camping doesn’t have to mean roughin’ it.  Many of the campgrounds offer wifi, water/electric sites and more!

STAY: Cabins

Bringing a large family or group? Renting a cabin with multiple bedrooms can save you money. Instead of 3 or more  rooms – one fully equipped cabin may be a cost effective option, plus, as a budget saving bonus, they have complete kitchens, grills etc.  Oh, and did we mention there are some nice cabins in these parts!

DO: See the Bridge

The  New River Gorge Bridge is  worth a gander. Get a great view from the overlook, or head out on the nearby trails to compare the many angles from which you can get a glimpse of the bridge. Each is uniquely fascinating. Once a year, you can stroll across the bridge topside as daring BASE jumpers leap off it during Bridge Day.

Ghost Towns

Walk among the remains of coal country in its prime. Fayette County is full of abandoned mining towns, still littered with rail trestle and ruins of their former vibrant days. Hop on a rented mountain bike from New River Bikes, and make a day of exploring the trails through Kaymoor and Thurmond.

Rafting Deals

The river that snake through Fayette County both stir up world-class rapids. Grab a paddle and row along on the ride with regular deals and packages from one of southern West Virginia’s professional river outfitters. Even if there is not a special promotion running (and there usually is), you can package your vacation, bundling in more adventures to get more bang from your budget.

Parks and Recreation

The New River Gorge National River,  Babock State Park and the Plum Orchard Lake Wildlife Management Area can all be found in Fayette County – and the best news is our parks do not have an admission fee.  There are free and low cost activities to be found at all the parks.  Hike, bike or just visit and enjoy the scenery.
