Color Play @ The Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia

Color Play – the newest exhibit at the Youth Museum will be on display until Dec. 31, 2017.

Color plays a vitally important role in the world in which we live. In art, color can produce a mood or atmosphere, create space, light and shadow. On a human level, color can sway thinking, change actions and cause reactions. Scientifically color can irritate or soothe your eyes, raise your blood pressure or suppress your appetite.

The exhibit has 14 hands-on components and at the different stations major concepts are explores such as white light, prisms, pixel colors, color mixing, afterimages, layering, color patterns and more.

Museum hours area daily 10am to 6pm.

Terror on Tams Haunted Trail @ Burning Rock Outdoor Adventure Park

Today’s Woman . . . The heart of the community. Sponsored by the Princeton/Mercer County Chamber of Commerce at the Brushfork National Guard Armory Bluefield, WV.  Crafts, luncheon, fashion show, prizes, music, women’s health issues and more! A must for every woman. 10 am to 8pm on Friday, October 27th and 10am to 5pm on Saturday October 28th.

Lake Shawnee’s Haunted House & Haunted History Tours @ Lake Shawnee

Lake Shawnee will be open this year on Friday & Saturday nights & Halloween with  2 attractions! Sept 29, 30, Oct 6,7,13,14, 20,21,27,28 and 31st.

1st – Photo and History Tour
Self-guided tour with storytelling by the campfires at the Park area and you can visit the Shawnee Indians Burial Grounds.You might want to bring a flashlight, camera or your paranormal equipment. PHOTOS WILL BE ALLOWED – Tour from dark to 11pm. 

2nd – Lake Nightmare
A haunted house attraction where our team of professional fright technicians will bring your worst fears to life. Our scares will become your Nightmares. NO PHOTOS OR VIDEO ALLOWED AT THIS ATTRACTION – Tickets will be sold until 10:30pm (10pm on Halloween night)

The haunted park has been the subject of several high profile TV shows including the Travel Channel’s Most Terrifying Places in America, the Discovery Channel’s Ghost Lab, and ABC’s Ten Most Haunted Places in the World. Paranormal investigators have combed the site in search of ghosts, and witnesses make claims of swings moving on their own and the disembodied laughter of children.

The best ghost stories are always based on history . . . stories of sightings and inexplicable encounters have long surrounded the historic downtown area of Beckley.  Find out what building is the most haunted; if the spirit of John McCreery still wanders his former home; and who exactly is the lady in red? Oct. 20, 21, 27, 28 & 31.

Space is limited please make reservations.  All tours begin and end at Brown Dog Bottom in the Beckley Underground, behind Tickety Boo Mercantile, 337 Neville St. Refreshments will be served there following the tours, and in the event of inclement weather, enjoy ghost stories from inside Brown Dog Bottom.

Laurel Branch Haunted Experience @ Laurel Branch

Are you scared? Join us for the annual Laurel Branch Haunted Experience every Friday and Saturday in October from Dark to Midnight.

Nightmare in the Gorge Haunted Trail @ ACE Adventure Resort

The Haunted Trail Hike takes place from 7:30 to Midnight with the last tickets sold at 11pm.  October 13, 14, 20, 21, 27 and 28th.

The Mad Butcher is coming back to the New River Gorge this fall. Dare to explore old abandoned buildings and dark corners of an adventure resort hidden in the woods. Campers and hikers have seen things here that will make your bones turn cold. Be careful not to stir the shadows, or creatures lurking in them. You never know who or what’s watching… maybe what’s left of those people who never checked out… maybe the thing that keeps them here. Just don’t scream, or they’ll find you.

If you make it through the haunted trail get a spot on one of the night zip line trips. Fly through the trees at 35 mph in complete darkness and hope something doesn’t pluck you from the sky! Tickets are available in advance and zip line trips require advance reservations.

Looking for a scary good time? Come to Lake Stephens for the Haunted Trail. Cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children 5-12.  Open October 13, 14, 20, 21, 27 and 28th.

Camp or Treat will be October 21st this year from 6-8 at the RV Park. It will  be $1 per child.

Hinton Railroad Days @ HInton Railroad Museum

October 21, 22, 28 and 29th.

Hinton Railroad Days is held annually in October.  Patrons of the New River Train Excursion wind through the “Grand Canyon of the East” and arrive in Hinton.  Passengers and visitors to Hinton alike enjoy the streets filled with a variety of vendors, great food and live entertainment. Visitors also enjoy the Hinton Railroad Museum and carriage rides through our Historic District.

New River Train Excursion @ Collis P Huntington - Railroad

Sponsored by C.P. Huntington Railroad. 300 Mile round-trip Rail Excursion through the New River Gorge. Train departs Huntington at 8:30am, St Albans at 9:15am and arrives in Hinton at 12:30 for Street Fair. Train runs October 21, 22, 28, and 29th.

 

Pipestem Pumpkin Run @ Pipestem Resort State Park

40th Annual Event! The Southern West Virginia Road Runners Club is sponsoring a 10,000 meter run, a 5,000 meter run, a 5,000 meter walk and a 800 meter fun run for children 12 years and younger. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. at the Canyon Rim Center. Multiple divisions. T-shirts guaranteed to first 100 registered.

Halloween Costume judging at finish line for those running and also running to have fun. A great late autumn event. Join us!

Tailgate Halloween @ Beckley Intermodal Gateway

Scenic Chairlift Rides @ Winterplace Ski Resort

Enjoy the beautiful fall colors on this scenic chairlift ride to the top of the mountain at Winterplace Ski Resort.  Ride back down or take a scenic hike. Join us between noon and 5pm every Saturday and Sunday in October.  Must be 38 inches tall to ride. Tennis shoes or hiking boots and appropriate clothing recommended.

City of Bluefield’s Trunk or Treat & Monster Dash @ Bluefield City Park

Face painting, pumpkin carving, bounce houses, and live music make this a must attend Halloween event! There will also be a 5K run, a kids fun run and of course lots of candy.

Annual Ghost Walk of Historic Bramwell @ Historic Bramwell Depot

A charming small town tour that will not scare you too bad but will definitely put you in a magical state of mind. Walk through this Victorian town and witness ghosts telling stories of their pasts. Music entertainment begins at 5pm.  A costume contest for all ages with fun prizes and surprises at 6pm. Winners announced at sundown. Ghost walk starts at 7pm – 10pm. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Tour begins at the Interpretive Center / Bramwell Depot.

Oak Hill’s Annual Pumpkin Festival @ Lively Amphitheater

Calling all ghouls and goblins. Our Annual Pumpkin Festival is here! Festivities will be from 7-9pm on Saturday, October 28th. Saturday morning be sure to drop off your carved Jack O Lanterns at The Lewis Pumpkin House (beside the Amp) between 9am-12pm. Please keep the top of the Pumpkin in tact and cut a hole in the bottom when removing seeds. This is for lighting purposes. Be sure to write your name in permanent marker on the back of the Pumpkin. There will be prizes for the best pumpkins!
The lighting of the Lewis Pumpkin House will be at dark, Trick or Treat will start at 7pm, and Hotel Transylvania will begin at 8pm.
