Coalwood, WV
About 8 miles south of Welch. Coalwood, WV has earned a sense of fame since its native son, Homer Hickam, wrote the book "Rocket Boys"; it became the movie, "October Sky". This story about a small boy growing up in a coal camp in WV with big dreams that reached beyond the coal mines, touched the world and has inspired visitors from all over to visit this small coal camp community. Today, visitors can stop at a Coal Heritage Kiosk and see some of the buildings that made up the town that Hickam memorialized.
