Try Kirkwood’s old-world wine tradition
The stomping of the grapes is an age-old tradition that dates back to Roman times.
Before machinery was used to crush the grapes and release the juice, people placed the grapes in a tub and stepped on them. The stomping not only celebrated the harvest, but was a very practical way to start the winemaking with the year’s vintage of grapes.
Today, this method is still used to let folks share in the good times. On Sept. 19 and 20, Kirkwood Winery will celebrate their 24th Annual Stomping of the Grapes with a weekend of family fun. Not only can you stomp around in the grape vat, you can also enjoy horse and buggy rides, live regional music, mountain clog dancers, wine tasting, great food, fun prizes and a Sunday hog roast.
