McDowell County

McDowell County, located deep in the heart of coal country, once held the distinction of being the world’s leading coal-producing county. Today, it is renowned for the “Rocket Boys,” the exhilarating Hatfield-McCoy ATV Trails and the iconic Head of the Dragon motorcycle route.

McDowell County, named in honor of Governor James McDowell in 1858, is located in the heart of coal-rich landscapes. Once a leading global coal producer, the county played a pivotal role in supplying the steel industry and crafting weapons and vessels critical to the victories of World War I and World War II. McDowell County’s narrative is immortalized in “Rocket Boys” by Homer Hickam, detailing the journey of Coalwood’s young innovators whose rocketry endeavors garnered national acclaim.

Welch, situated at the confluence of the Tug River and Elkhorn Creek, serves as the county seat. Renowned for its pioneering World War I memorial building, Welch boasts a vibrant historic district showcasing diverse architectural and cultural nuances.

Adventure enthusiasts flock to McDowell County for the renowned Hatfield-McCoy ATV Trails, encompassing the expansive Indian Ridge and Warrior Trail Systems. Beyond the trails, McDowell County’s secluded wilderness offers unparalleled hunting opportunities, uniquely allowing only bow hunting during deer season.
