Anytime you visit a new place, there’s one question you should ask: “Where do the locals go?” Whether it’s hiking, biking, shopping, or relaxing, locals are the key to finding those sometimes overlooked or unknown places in your vacation destination. At no time are locals more helpful than when trying to decide where to dine. Searching out the best local cuisine can sometimes be a tough task.  But never fear, we’re here to share some restaurants with you that locals can’t get enough of! Where To Go, What to Eat According to locals, these are just a few of their favorite eating-out spots: * Pies and Pints- This restaurant features handcrafted pizza and beer, and beer and handcrafted pizza. Need we say more?  Locals liked it so much that they branched out from their Fayetteville location and opened a second restaurant in Charleston. * Pasquale -   This Beckley restaurant has been serving the area’s best Italian food for 50 years. * Chetty's Pub- After a day of rafting with Adventures on the Gorge, Monday night wing night is a must. * The Char- Looking for a formal dining option?  Go to The Char, one of Beckley's finest restaurants. * The Market at Courthouse Square in Hinton, WV.  Extraordinary pizza, sandwiches, baked good and gelato.  Sandwiches have railroad themed names.  Awesome small town dining open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. * The Bramwell Cafe- Country food at it’s best and just like mom used to make. * Tamarack- Featuring a menu create by The Greenbrier, the fried green tomatoes are a must-try.  And after you dine, you’ll have the chance to view lots of West Virginia crafts and artisans at work. Last Minute Valentine’s Day Ideas Valentine’s Day is just 3 days away and is sure to catch a few of us offguard.  If you haven’t ordered roses, made a dinner reservation, or gotten construction paper together for the kids to make a card, then you’re probably running out of time. But instead of making a bunch of calls or running a bunch of errands, why not book one of Southern WV’s great romantic packages?  From Twin Falls to Pipestem and the Nostalgia Inn all offer “sweet” deals from spa treatments to ballroom dancing lessons. Not sure if you can get away this weekend?  Plan a trip for later in February when you can have a last skiing hoorah or give a gift certificate for spring when special events like the Lewisburg Chocolate Festival or Bramwell Spring Homes Tour kick off the warmer season.

Ghost Tours in Southern West Virginia

Full moons.  Creaky doors.  Historic houses.  It’s certain that this year in Southern West Virginia things will go bump in the night. From the scary to the historic, the area is full of ghostly stories and haunted happenings perfect for putting you in the Halloween spirit. Lewisburg Ghost Tours He comes here often to visit old friends ... to this quiet hillside field. You wouldn't even notice him were it not for his clothes ... tattered and torn relies of the past. He just walks silently by, a slow, soft shuffle, eyes fixed and staring, as he makes his way to the old churchyard cemetery downtown ... where he is buried, along with more than 100 other Confederate soldiers killed here 139 years ago. He is but one of the ghosts who walk the streets of downtown Lewisburg. (excerpt taken from State Journal article by TL Headley) Friday and Saturday Evenings through October 30 Enjoy a candlelit walking tour of the Lewisburg Historic District where ghostly tales are shared based on local legend.  Tour stops include the historic General Lewis Inn and the Lewisburg Cemetery, dating back to the 1800s.  Tour departs from the General Lewis Inn at 8pm.  Tickets are $20, children under 7 are free. 3rd Annual Bramwell Ghost Walk October 23 In this historic boom town, spirits return from their wanderings to tell their own tale to onlookers.  Ghosts include coal barons, coal miners, and children whose apparitions are still seen today.  Spirits will start to gather at 5pm at Bramwell’s train station and along Main Street.  There will be live music and food at the Bramwell Café.  Ghost Walk begins at 7pm.  Tickets are $10 in Advance and $15 at the door. Lake Shawnee Haunted Amusement Park Guided Walking Tour Open October 22nd - October 31st.  Tours begin at Dusk.  This location is on the Travel Channel's Most Terrifying Places In America list.  Digital cameras and audio recorders are welcome.  FLASHLIGHT NEEDED.  Cost is $8 for adults, $5 for children.  Private tours are available year round. Bluefield Walking Tours Bluefield West Virginia was founded in the late 1800's and over the years has accumulated a rich history…in ghost stories. The tour will discuss the history of the town, but will focus on ghost stories of the historic buildings. Mark Painter, a local paranormal investigator, will lead some of the tours. Cost is $12 for the Walking Tour or $32 for the VIP Tour. Can’t Miss Fall Festivals

Streets lined with food.  Beer gardens.  Celebrations 876 ft in the air.  These are what West Virginia festivals are made of and over the next two weekends there are lots of lip-smacking events to choose from.  Here are some insider tips on what’s new with these can’t miss fall festivals: * Taste Of Our Towns (TOOT) Festival – Lewisburg.  Saturday, October 9.  The event staff has told us this will be the largest TOOT yet – with 18 additional food vendors lining the street of this historic town. New food finds will include Stella’s, a tea house coming soon and two additional wineries. * Bramwell’s Oktoberfest – Bramwell.  Saturday, October 9 - This year’s event features 11 bands to set the stage for this fun event.  Your $18 ticket (or $20 at the door) includes all the live entertainment and all the beer tastings you can hold until they run out.  Some additional food vendors and artists have also been added. * Bridge Day – Fayetteville.  October 15-16 - Friday October 15th from 5-9 pm is Taste of Bridge Day @ Smokey's on The Gorge and on Saturday the 16th is the 31st annual Bride Day Festival - the only day it's legal to walk across the New River Gorge Bridge.
