SUMMARY:James and the Giant Peach
DESCRIPTION:The Students of GVT’s Education Program Present a Classic.\nJames and the Giant Peach has been delighting families for decades. Many will know the children’s novel written in 1961\, and even more\, will know the Disney film from 1996. Now the stage\nproduction is coming to Greenbrier Valley Theatre. Based on one of Roald Dahl’s most recognizable and quirky stories\, the musical follows James as he discovers a magic potion that grows a tremendous peach and launches him into a journey beyond his wildest imagination. Joining him is a band of singing insects as they ride the peach across the ocean toward an unlikely family bond.\nAli Wills\, a senior in her final GVT Education Program production\, plays Spiker\, one of James’s aunts that propel him to find the magical peach. “Audiences will enjoy the theme of community and found family\,” says Wills. “James and the Giant Peach has such a funny way of going about it where audiences experience the heartwarming theme while still laughing at the funny songs and dances.” Directed by Jacob Masters\, James\, and the Giant Peach will also bring some unique twists to the stage that goes beyond the original story. “It has challenged us to grow\, and think outside the box\,” said Wills. “We want to think about unique ways to make the story personal to us and our theatre.” Now entering its 56th season\, Greenbrier Valley Theatre\, is a mainstay and theatre destination located in Lewisburg\, WV. The arts organization has been further recognized as a “West Virginia Jewel of the Hills\,” awarded the Living the Dream Service Organization Honor Roll by Martin Luther King\, Jr. Holiday Commission\, and is a multi-year recipient of Non-Profit Business of the Year. GVT boasts a robust series of year-round programming and educational offers with the goal to enlighten\, enrich\, and enliven throughout the region. James and the Giant Peach Jr. opens at GVT on March 23 and runs through April 1. Tickets are $17 for general seating\, $15 for seniors\, and $13 for students. For more information on tickets\, shows\, and the organization’s history\, visit the theatre’s website: www.gvtheatre.org or call the box office at (304) 645-3838.

SUMMARY:THE FABULOUS BAKER SISTERS RETURN - SECOND STAGE SERIES
DESCRIPTION:Carnegie Hall’s Second Stage Series presents The Fabulous Baker Sisters RETURN in the Old Stone Room on Thursday\, March 30\, at 7:30 p.m. Guests are invited to come early for a Preshow Reception from 6:30 – 7:15 p.m. The Second Stage Series is sponsored by Smooth Ambler.\nThe Fabulous Baker Sisters RETURN ……. Come enjoy an evening with these two delightfully humorous and quick-witted sisters\, as they once again share new and classic funny stories\, memories\, and monologues based on their distinctly silly view of the world!\nThe Fabulous Baker Sisters—Margaret Baker and Barbara Baker Elliott—grew up in Smithfield\, North Carolina\, as UKs (Undertaker’s Kids)\, which explains a lot.\nBummed about having a master’s in theater but working as a waitress\, Margaret succumbed to a real job writing for kiddie television in NC. She then chucked that aside\, ran off\, and joined an alternative theater company. The Road Company\, based in Johnson City\, Tennessee\, produced original plays based on improvisation while traveling in a van held together by duct tape. Upon drifting to Philadelphia to study Yankee ways Margaret stumbled upon a career writing and performing one-woman comedy. After that\, she inexplicably moved to the end of nowhere in lovely Pocahontas County\, West Virginia\, where she spent 18 years performing here and there and helping children write rubber chicken-inspired plays.\nBarbara graduated from college with no real post-graduate plans\, so she took a job as assistant editor of The Journal of Parapsychology. She then spent years as a writer in higher education\, public television\, and banking before she\, too\, inexplicably moved to West Virginia\, where her first job was as PR/Education Director at Carnegie Hall. For many years she has written a humor column and feature articles for The Greenbrier Valley Quarterly. In 2018 she compiled a decade’s worth of her columns into a book\, The Accidental Mountaineer\, published by Havenbrook Media with illustrations by Sally Cooper.
