SUMMARY:National Rafting Championship
DESCRIPTION:Athletes from across the United States will compete as teams of six in a variety of races including sprint\, head-to-head\, slalom and downriver events.  The classes for the competition include Youth (15-19 years)\, Junior (15-23 years)\, Masters (40+ years) and Open.\nThe dates include two practice days and three competition days.  Spectators will have access to most events. \nThe event  will  be the qualifier for the World Rafting Championship to be held on the Tully River in Australia.  The world event takes place in May 2019.

DESCRIPTION:Beckley Concert Association is kicking off their season with The Steel Wheels.  Coming from Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia\, they are familiar with the traditions of folk music and how a string band is supposed to sound.   In fact\, they have been drawing on those steadfast traditions for more than a decade. What sets them apart from many bands is the combination of their stellar instrumentals\, accentuated by the one of a kind lead vocal\, Trent Wagler\, and keenly supported by strong harmonies and Eric Brubaker on fiddle\, Jay Lapp on mandolin\, and Brian Dickel on bass.\nThis engagement of The Steel Wheels is made possible through the Special Presenter Initiatives program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation with the support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the West Virginia Division of Culture and History. \nPerformance starts at 7:30 at Woodrow Wilson High School Auditorium in Beckley.

SUMMARY:Thunder on the Gauley\, The Battle of Carnifex Ferry Civil War Reenactment
DESCRIPTION:Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park is an important Civil War battle site. On September 10\, 1861 Union troops led by Brigadier General William S. Rosecrans engaged the Confederates and forced them to evacuate an entrenched position on the Henry Patterson Farm which overlooked Carnifex Ferry. The Confederate commander\, Brigadier General John B. Floyd\, retreated across the ferry to the south side of the Gauley River and on eastward to Meadow Bluff near Lewisburg. This Civil War battle represented the failure of a Confederate drive to regain control of the Kanawha Valley. As a result\, the movement for West Virginia statehood proceeded without serious threat from the Confederates.\nEvery other year (even years) Carnifex hosts a living history and reenactment weekend. The reenactment is always held on the closest Sunday to September 10th with living history demonstrations on the the Saturday prior.  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Pumpkin Harvest Festival
DESCRIPTION:The 13th annual Pumpkin Festival is scheduled for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. The admission is free  and tickets for rides can be purchased at the festival. Parking is available at either the American Electric Power Company or Cranberry Prosperity Elementary School\, where shuttle service will be provided. \nThe festival will offer a yard sale\, inflatable toys\, miniature train rides\, a Space Ball\, games\, face painting\, tractor-pulled hay rides and horse and buggy rides. \nLive entertainment schedule: \nSaturday \n\nNoon — Magician RickDaston\n1p.m. — Jeremy Blankenship\n2 p.m. — Live Auction\n3 p.m. — Rick Lilly\n\nSunday \n\n1p.m. — Daniel Lilly and the Lilly Mountaineers\n2 p.m. — Colton Pack\n4 p.m. — Eric Robbins\n\n Contests for the event will include a pie\, seed spitting\, a quilt show and pumpkin and booth decorating contests. \nVendors will also be on site and Burlington will also have pumpkins\, gourds\, Indian corn\, corn shocks and tons of tie-dye items for sell. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
