This a free event. \n3:30-5 p.m. Storytelling workshop with Homer Hickam at Tamarack’s HC Smith Theater. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for students and teachers. \n7 p.m. The Mini Musical “Homer\, Elsie and Sonny” starring Homer Hickam\, Rhayne Thomas and Carl Traman with special guest Jon Wikstrom. Organizers are calling it a “once in a lifetime” experience. SUMMARY:Twin Falls Resort State Park Photography Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Steve Shaluta & Steven Rotsch\, and park superintendent Scott Durham are the workshop instructors.\nIf you’re an amateur photographer or a working pro\, you will pick up lots of tips to increase your photo skills. The workshop is the perfect time to learn new skills and hone old ones.  Twin Falls 4\,000 acres\, complete with the park’s Pioneer Farm\, create picture perfect settings for photography. There is always the possibility you’ll also capture photographs of the park’s flora and fauna. Past workshops have included discussions about various types of photography equipment and photo editing tools\, composition\, using natural light and flash photography\, how to photograph people\, action photography\, scenic photography\, digital imaging and file storage. Both Steve’s also have experience with aerial and drone photography. The classes are very fluid\, and participant’s questions and requests are always welcome. \nThe workshop includes lots of hands-on photography outings\, including a popular night photography session when weather permits. If you have a specific interest or subject you’d like to learn\, ask the instructors and they will make every effort to help. The Sunday morning session includes a critique of their student’s favorite photographs.

DESCRIPTION: The Raleigh is proud to host experimental pop band Man Man with supporters GRLwood. Pre-sale tickets are $13\, door tickets on day of show are $17. \nMan Man is a highly revered\, avant-garde rock band born out of the weird streets of Philadelphia and now brewing in the even weirder sunshine of Los Angeles. The band sounds nothing like but is frequently compared to some of the more well-known godfathers of the genre\, Captain Beefheart\, Frank Zappa\, Can\, and The Residents.  The ever-evolving ensemble mixes and mashes a variety of genres from ragtime to rock\, electronic to acoustic\, doo-wop to exorcism and it revels in defying classifications\, expectations\, and anything remotely cliché. Still\, what emerges from that mixture are beautifully crafted little pop earworms that can’t easily be dislodged from your brain. \nOpening act GRLwood is a self-described SCREAM-POP duo\, comprising a couple of “Kentucky fried queerdos\, wailing at max capacity\, from Louisville\, KY.” Established in 2017\, GRLwood “exploded onto Louisville’s music scene\, quickly earning them a cult-like following.” \nWe here at The Raleigh have prided ourselves on being able to both support a plethora of local art and culture\, as well as present unique programming by creators from literally around the globe. With these endeavors\, of course\, come higher up-front costs\, and in order to continue to organize these events we need the community’s support. That said\, boasting some of the best acoustics and most skilled sound technicians in southern West Virginia\, we guarantee that this concert is one that you won’t want to miss!

DESCRIPTION:Oct. 11 Horror Movie Marathon …. Mystery showing \nKeeping up with tradition\, the theater will host its monthly mystery horror screening. However\, because Halloween is this month\, the playhouse is taking things a step further by hosting a mystery horror marathon from 7 p.m. to roughly 3 a.m. \nMovies being screened from 7 to 11 p.m. have been recommended for viewers ages 13 or older. Screenings following 11 p.m. will be “anything goes\,” meaning they will be R rated\, recommended for ages 16 or older. \n\n\n\n\nA full night’s admission is priced at $5. \nOct. 15 Blindsight \nAt 7 p.m.: The Raleigh will screen a documentary called “Blindsight\,” which follows a group of blind teenagers as they scale a portion of Mount Everest. Panel discussion will follow screening.  \nThis screening event is operating in conjunction with a White Cane Safety Event earlier in the day at Jim Word Memorial Park in Beckley from 1 to 3:30 p.m. The event will include a visual impairment experience simulation as well as an obstacle course. \nBoth events are being organized by a young visually impaired individual and are supported by Mountain State Centers for Independent Living and Division of Rehabilitation Services. \nOct. 17 – The 29th Annual Candlelight Vigil \nWith October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month\, the Women’s Resource Center will have the 29th annual Raleigh Candlelight Vigil at the theater to honor victims and celebrate survivors of domestic violence from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
