DESCRIPTION:Beckley Concert Association is kicking off their season with The Steel Wheels.  Coming from Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia\, they are familiar with the traditions of folk music and how a string band is supposed to sound.   In fact\, they have been drawing on those steadfast traditions for more than a decade. What sets them apart from many bands is the combination of their stellar instrumentals\, accentuated by the one of a kind lead vocal\, Trent Wagler\, and keenly supported by strong harmonies and Eric Brubaker on fiddle\, Jay Lapp on mandolin\, and Brian Dickel on bass.\nThis engagement of The Steel Wheels is made possible through the Special Presenter Initiatives program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation with the support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the West Virginia Division of Culture and History. \nPerformance starts at 7:30 at Woodrow Wilson High School Auditorium in Beckley.

SUMMARY:Thunder on the Gauley\, The Battle of Carnifex Ferry Civil War Reenactment
DESCRIPTION:Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park is an important Civil War battle site. On September 10\, 1861 Union troops led by Brigadier General William S. Rosecrans engaged the Confederates and forced them to evacuate an entrenched position on the Henry Patterson Farm which overlooked Carnifex Ferry. The Confederate commander\, Brigadier General John B. Floyd\, retreated across the ferry to the south side of the Gauley River and on eastward to Meadow Bluff near Lewisburg. This Civil War battle represented the failure of a Confederate drive to regain control of the Kanawha Valley. As a result\, the movement for West Virginia statehood proceeded without serious threat from the Confederates.\nEvery other year (even years) Carnifex hosts a living history and reenactment weekend. The reenactment is always held on the closest Sunday to September 10th with living history demonstrations on the the Saturday prior.  \n  \n
