SUMMARY:The Appalachian Hope Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Appalachian Hope Project is a youth organization that organizes youth support groups for at-risk teens and youth in the foster care system here in WV. Our mission is to get these teens out doing positive productive activities and learning essential life skills to promote creativity\, mental health wellness\, prevent unhealthy behaviors\, and build positive relationships. We are working with DHHR to establish a group in all 55 WV counties by 2025.\nWe are planning a summer youth festival called The Appalachian Hope Festival on August 7th at Burning Rock Off-Road Park. This is a free event for the community but we will also be bringing teens from foster homes and youth care facilities from across the state. We want to feature West Virginia Crafters\, Business Owners\, Artists\, Musicians\, youth groups\, teen leaders\, and other organizations that are trying to make a positive impact on the WV foster care system. We want to set up games\, activities\, workshops\, and showcases for teens and their families to participate in. We will also be raffling off 1 day of riding for 4 people and 1 night of camping at Burning Rock Off-Road Park to fundraise for our program expansion. There will be an indoor geology presentation on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. discussing the geology of WV. A Saturday morning hike to view rock formations at Twin Falls begins at 10:00 a.m.\nThe 7:00 p.m. evening program is at Twin Falls Resort State Park Lodge\, Magnolia Room. There is no fee to attend\, and the event is open to the public. \nAttending the evening program to learn about the geology of the Mountain State and also participating on the hike to look at geology and formations at Twin Falls earns each attendee a “Geology Rocks!” patch. This patch is one of six special patches to be earned when attending and participating in special interpretive programs. \nExcellent for any age. Join us.

DESCRIPTION:The New River Gorge Master Naturalists will host a free Salamander Foray on Tuesday\, Aug. 17 from 7:15 to 9 p.m. at the Canyon Rim Visitors Center\, Lansing. Lenza Paul\, wildlife biological science technician with the National Park Service\, will give a brief talk and lead those in attendance on an expedition to explore the secretive world of the salamander. The New River Gorge is home to several species of interest\, including the Master Naturalist Mascot\, the Green Salamander. With a little luck and Lenza’s expertise\, visitors could get a glimpse of one of these fantastic creatures. Meet at the Canyon Rim Visitor Center parking lot at 7:15 and caravan down into the Gorge from there. Bring a headlamp\, just in case. All are welcome.
