Astrophotography Basics Workshop
July 23, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Meet up at BAC Art Lab for a primer on long exposure work, photographing the stars and Milky Way with plenty of time to go over any questions participants may have.
9pm:
We will take a break and meet back up again at around 9:00 to 9:15 pm to drive to the Concho Overlook from there, and end shooting at the bottom of the New River Gorge after midnight.
Materials required:
-A modern DSLR or mirrorless camera with an interchangeable lens system, a very wide-angle lens (11-20mm is ideal), a very wide aperture (f/2.8 is ideal but as narrow as f/3.5 can work), a sturdy tripod, and a headlamp to see at night.
Participants should have a basic knowledge of their camera’s operation in Manual mode (control of shutter, aperture, and ISO). All locations are easily accessible and within a short walking distance of our vehicles.
What to expect:
Learn to photograph the starry night sky and the Milky Way within the New River Gorge! We will begin with a classroom portion discussing the basics of long exposure photography, how to find and photograph the stars and the Milky Way with earthly landscapes using basic camera gear, as well as how to locate and scout for dark sky areas to shoot. After dark, we will put our new knowledge to the test to photograph the Milky Way in the Gorge and end the night utilizing the New River Gorge Bridge against a starry backdrop!
