Celebrating Our Independence (4th of July!) in southern WV
Southern WV is exploding with celebration, well beyond just the fireworks! Here are some of the best spots to get into the action:
This PGA tour event is a mega-gathering, with a family fun concert series lined up along with the tournament. The elegant Greenbrier brings in top acts around the country to perform at the state fair grounds, so you can enjoy a slice of the contemporary music and culture of our great nation.
This year, pop-rockers Maroon 5 will belt out their hits on Independence Day, with the smooth be achy sounds of legend Jimmy Buffet filling the grounds Saturday.
Alderson 4th of July Celebration
Known to have the best shindig in the state when Independence Day rolls around, Alderson keeps the fun rolling all week long, from June 28 through July 5. To really kick off the summer fun, slip down watersides, scurry up the rock wall, and cool off with an ice cream cone. Pedal over the bike race finish line, down as many dogs as you can in the hot dog eating contest, then browse crafts while you chill with
All while kids can enjoy petting animals and bouncing on inflatables. It’s easy to see why this is a multi-day affair.
WV Living named Alderson’s fireworks show #1, and of course you can catch the sky explosion (and ground displays) on the evening of the 4th at 10:15.
Fayetteville Lions Club Fourth of July Celebration
Enjoy 2 days dedicated to the USA in downtown Fayetteville! It all begins with a grand parade through town, then the games begin: hula hooping, frog jumping, seed spitting, sack races… and all the classics. Live music signals that the fireworks are on their way, and when dusk finally falls, the sky will stream with color.
Saturday morning, you can stroll through some of the local crafts at Market Day or local produce at the Farmer’s Market. Support small business, and America’s own! Then enjoy another round of great music as the band plays out the evening.
Celebrate America with some Americana pastimes. Make it a long weekend and begin Thursday night with bluegrass and country pickin’ out on the deck with songwriter Daniel Lilly of the Lilly Mountaineers. Then, Saturday, square dance with one of the world’s best known teachers and callers, Lou Maiuri. Een if you can’t dance, he’ll have you moving to the beat in traditional Appalachian style.
Then, top it off with an acoustic blend of Southern rock, country and blues in the amphitheater.Spend the off moments exploring the wild and wonderful in West Virginia, appreciating our native USA landscapes and sense of adventure!
Fireworks Night with The Miners
What’s more American than baseball? Catch America’s favorite pastime on America’s big day. The Beckley Miners will take on Lorain County Ironmen at home, and, win or lose, the game is followed up by fireworks.
This year this these will be the only fireworks in the City of Beckley so they have arranged for an extra parking area to be open and a local radio station will sync the display with music!
Carnival & Fireworks at Adventures on the Gorge
The evening after the Fayetteville Lion’s Club celebration, spend Saturday at the free carnival at Adventures on the Gorge. Inflatables, games, and contests for prizes from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., followed by a bouquet of explosions across the sky. Live entertainment will be provided by the North Carolina funk band, Elusive Groove.
Celebrate the states by exploring the county’s natural beauty. Adventure with a friend, and take a BOGO (buy one, get one) holiday rafting trip down the Lower or Upper New. Or, go big for the triple scoop: 3 big adventures, plus camping for 2 nights, live entertainment, and some meals (2 breakfasts, 2 lunches and a dinner.)
The adventures are an all-star lineup: a full day of Upper or Lower New River Rafting; a half-day adventure of your choice from mountain biking, rock climbing or zip-lining; and a gold pass to their on-site lake and adventure park with a Eurobungee, climbing wall, lake launch pad, aquatic inflatables and more.
