Dreams of Spring

When Old Man Winter strikes, it’s hard not to dream of spring. Well, why not? You can always plan a warm-weather adventure ahead of time.

It’s never too early.

Even in the depths of winter, Southern West Virginia’s outfitters can feed that springtime wanderlust.

April Showers Bring May World-Class Rapids

Around here, seasons arrive in a big way. Take spring for example. While early rains bring a new blanket of green across the hills of Southern West Virginia, they also flood the region’s rivers. That high water creates outstanding waves—waves you can ride.

You have two fantastic opportunities. First up: the New River. Springtime corkscrews the famous “Lower” portion into twisty currents, hydraulics, and waves. Provided you’re feeling brave enough, it’s a blast.

There’s also the Gauley River. Untamed and wicked, the “Beast of the East” roars to action with extreme whitewater. It’s even more intense than the New. But if you’re experienced, this is one trip you can’t miss.

Ready to book that ride? With the help of local outfitters, you can get some early whitewater fun. Popular picks include ACE Adventure Resort and River Expeditions in Oak Hill and Adventures on the Gorge and New & Gauley River Adventures in Lansing.

And don’t let the idea of cold water temperatures scare you away from the joys of spring rafting, either. Outfitters have appropriate gear for every rafting trip.
