Visit the New River Gorge


The New River Gorge Bridge is the longest steel arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere and stands 876 feet over the New River. Near the Bridge is Fayetteville, a unique little town noted for its history and eclectic dining. Also surrounding the Bridge is the New River Gorge National River. This National Recreation Area offers numerous hiking trails and a visitor center. Come spend a day exploring the natural beauty of the New River and finish it off with a taste of Fayetteville.

  • There were two mining towns with the name Kaymoor: Kaymoor Top and Kaymoor Bottom. The mine entrances and supporting buildings were located at Kaymoor Top. After coal was brought out of the mines, it was conveyed down the Gorge to Kaymoor Bottom, where it was loaded onto waiting trains. Today, only ruins are left. Moderate trails lead into both Kaymoor Top and Kaymoor Bottom

  • A moderate trail leads to Long Point, an outcrop of rock that provides spectacular views of the Gorge and the Bridge.

  • Historic downtown Fayetteville is a unique small town full of history, charm, excellent local dining and shopping opportunities. Every October, Fayetteville hosts Bridge Day, a much-anticipated local event that involves crafters, fair food and, of course, BASE jumpers parachuting off the New River Gorge Bridge.

  • This high adventure company offers catwalk tours under the New River Gorge Bridge, including night tours and seasonal special events.

  • Part of the New River Gorge National River, inside you will find displays explaining the natural history and local culture, as well as a gift shop and some spectacular overlooks.
